What is liability insurance?

And what does a liability insurance reimburse?

Imagine your aunt’s glasses are on the couch during a birthday celebration and you accidentally sit on them. Or your partner was cycling and accidentally collided with a child on his bicycle. They both took a fall and it looks like the boy broke his leg. Both your aunt and the parents of the bicycle victim can claim costs for material damage and personal injury, because according to the law you are liable in both cases.

Personal liability insurance covers any damage or injury that you or one of your family members cause to someone else, providing it was not caused through driving a car or other motor vehicle. This applies to damage to property and injury to persons. This insurance also covers damage or injury caused by your pet(s). If you are legally liable, your insurer will pay for the other person’s damage or medical costs.

Personal liability insurance is not compulsory, but we do recommend it. The costs of causing an accident can add up, especially if there is personal injury involved.
